Providence Public Library hosts Jobs Club for ELL adults

Jobs Club is for ELL adults who are looking for work.  At Jobs Club, learners practice language and skills for interviewing and completing job applications.  They practice digital literacy skills for the job search online: researching openings and navigating online applications.  They receive assistance with resume preparation and one-on-one support with their job search during office hours outside of class time.  Learners are oriented to entry-level employment in different sectors.  The class visits local employers for back-of-house tours, and the opportunity to meet with HR.  This spring, the class visited hotels, a nursing home, a grocery store and a production bakery.  According to interest, learners complete a food handler certificate relevant to entry-level work in the hospitality and health care sectors.  Learners are referred to additional training, volunteer opportunities as appropriate for their interest and experience levels.

Jobs Club provides a valuable introduction to US culture around the job application process and the workplace for foreign born adults.  For the majority of participants, this may be their first job in the US or their first job search via online application and resume submission, as opposed to in the informal economy.

This year’s spring session was facilitated by the Institute of Labor Studies and Research (ILSR) as part of the Providence Public Library’s Learning Lounge services through ALL Access in the Libraries.  The Club served a total of 14 adults, with 8 gaining employment as a Cook, Room Attendant, Car Attendant, Cleaning (2), Housekeeping (2) and Laundry.   One participant was connected with volunteer work related to her graduate degree.
